The Salam Institute for Peace and Justice is a DC-based nonprofit organization bringing over a decade of experience in international peacebuilding with a religious and interfaith focus – engaging national and local faith leaders, educators, and communities through research, education, capacity building, and dialogue in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Founded by Dr. Mohammed Abu-Nimer, the Salam Institute mobilizes religious traditions and resources to promote pluralism, non-violence, and human rights. Salam has worked in places as diverse as Sri Lanka, Egypt, Chad, Niger, Burkina Faso, the Balkans, and the United States in order to:
• Further inter-religious dialogue among Muslims and non-Muslims in Western and non- Western societies;
• Promote action oriented approaches to peace and justice among diverse communities;
• Identify, develop, and mobilize resources in the Muslim community to catalyze peacebuilding and development in conflict environments;
• Provide scholarly and professional expertise to schools, governments, and non-governmental actors regarding the various political, socio-cultural, religious, and economic aspects of conflict in an Islamic context;
• Enhance the knowledge base of Islamic models for conflict resolution and peace among educators, practitioners, academicians, and policy makers; and
• Advance the integration of local traditions and values in areas of education, peace, conflict resolution, and development.
