Vandrazel Mandangan Birowa

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of our SEA-AIR fellow and small grants recipient, Vandrazel Mandangan Birowa. Vandrazel was a passionate and dedicated peacebuilder whose work with religious and traditional actors, particularly in Sulu Island, Mindanao, left a lasting impact. His insights and lived experiences have enriched our regional and global understanding of grassroots approaches to peacebuilding and the prevention of violent extremism.

We are grateful for his contributions, and we honor his commitment to creating a more just and peaceful world. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, and community during this difficult time. May he rest in peace.

As a SEA-AIR Interfaith Fellow, Vandrazel implemented his initiative, ‘Mentoring and Empowering the Youth for a Community where Moderation, Tolerance, and Co-Existence Prevail.’ The initiative aimed to build the capacity of young Ulamas and priests, out-of-school youth leaders, and students to become influences in their peer groups in promoting freedom of religion, tolerance, and moderation.

According to Vand,

“If young religious leaders’ diverse views are positively harnessed through genuine appreciation of Islamic moderation, then there will be less chance of becoming radicals and extremist. This is because young Ulama and other religious leaders hild sway over their followers in their respective communities, masjids [mosques], churches, and madrasas.”

Vandrazel’s dedication has left a lasting impression on us all, and his work will continue to serve as a guiding light. We invite you to join us in remembering his contributions, detailed below.
