Named as Peacemakers, Sheikh Al-Marwani and Ms. Giguiento join 28 other local actors from 22 conflict zones. Each Peacemaker has a unique personal history and approach to ending violence but all are religiously motivated and relatively unknown, have worked in an area of armed conflict, and have risked their lives or freedom.
Sheikh Al-Marwani negotiates peace between tribal leaders in Yemen and works to counter calls for extremism. Deng Giguiento is a teacher and has worked in the Mindanao conflict, creating alliances among conflicting Christian, Muslim and indigenous groups.
Tanenbaum also invites the awardees to the Peacemakers in Action Network. Tanenbaum established the Network to enable peace activists inspire each other and share knowledge and skills. It aims to achieve these goals by bringing the Network together for capacity building retreats, facilitating grassroots peacebuilding interventions and coordinating regular communication and calls, so that the Peacemakers can brainstorm together.
