Strengthening Cooperation Between Local Muslim and Buddhist Female Peacebuilders
Events | May 2023
To improve the efficacy of resource mobilization for peace processes among women’s groups, it is important to recognize the potential of interfaith dialogue and cooperation among local communities.
On May 27 and 28, the Peacemakers Network’s Asia Working Group grant-recipient, Anna Christi Suwardi, conducted a workshop on inclusive dialogue for Muslim and Buddhist female peacebuilders in the southern provinces of Thailand collectively known as the “Deep South.” 25 women met in Pattani to analyze the complex and often-stalled peace processes between the Thai government, rebel groups, and community leaders such as themselves. On the first day, the Governor of Pattani, Pateemoh Sadeeyamu, attended the conference, sharing experiences from her career in public service. Participants also met and discussed practical knowledge with a female member of the ongoing peace negotiation team from Bangkok. For many participants, this was a beneficial opportunity to meet with community leaders from different faith groups.

The common challenges and opportunities that were discussed in the workshop will inform Anna’s remaining work in the coming months. The dialogue is part of the grant’s larger objective to improve the efficacy of resource mobilization for peace initiatives among women’s groups by strengthening cooperation between local Muslim and Buddhist female peacebuilders.
